S3NY Special Projects
• "Blues, Ballads and Beyond"
String Trio of New York with special guest, the extraordinary
saxophonist/composer Oliver Lake. This highly dynamic project
features original works by Oliver along with classic works by Mingus
and Ellington. This project has appeared at Da Camera of Houston,
Unity Concerts (Montclair, NJ) and the Rose Center in the Hayden
Planetarium in New York City.
• "Myths and Legends"
The celebrated saxophonist/composer Joe Lovano joins S3NY in this
special project. In 1997, Lovano toured nationally with S3NY to
celebrate their 20th anniversary season. He was commissioned by the
group to write Myths and Legends for the occasion. This project has
performed at Spivey Hall (Atlanta), the Yerba Buena Center (San
Francisco), the Knitting Factory (NYC), Ohio University, the Clef
Club (Philadelphia) and other locations.
• S3NY & Symphony Orchestra
S3NY extends their scintillating and unique expression into the
symphonic realm. Thrilling and authentic orchestrations of jazz
classics Take the A Train (Strayhorn), 'Round Midnight (Monk) and A
Night in Tunisia (Gillespie) are offered along with Cobalt Blue,
guitarist James Emery's premiere work for the Trio and Orchestra.
This program was performed to great public acclaim at Constitution
Hall (Washington, DC) with the Air Force Symphony.
• S3NY & Chamber Orchestra
Experience the magic and virtuosity of S3NY in performance of
original works for S3NY and chamber orchestra by John Lindberg and
James Emery. This highly stimulating and unique program offers The
Catbird Sings (Lindberg) and Transformations (Music for 3 Improvisers
and Orchestra) by Emery. The Catbird Sings has been performed by the
New York Chamber Ensemble and Transformations has been performed and
recorded by Klangforum Wien.
